I must admit, it was one of my more questionable ideas when I decided it would be great to invite my in-laws AND my mother to join us on our long awaited family adventure in Europe.
3 and a half weeks on the go with 7 people ranging from 5yrs to 75yrs? Surely that is a recipe for disaster?!
Not so. And here’s why.
While we go on vacation to reconnect and spend quality time with our kids, I’m not gonna lie, the bonus of having 3 Grandparents (#babysitters) along for the ride is incredibly appealing.
A lot has changed since having children but my love of a great rooftop bar and a killer cocktail has not. (I may be a mother, but I’m still human, dammit!). Unfortunately this love does not go hand in hand with a 5 & 7 yr old. Enter Grandparent’s babysitting services. Winning!
But despite ready-made babysitters being advantageous for said rooftop bar, creating incredible memories for our kids with the people they love most is 100% the best reason for sharing this trip together.
The best family holidays create treasured memories but can take some serious planning.
From destination to hotel choice and everything in between, planning a trip that will not result in a major family feud can be a minefield.
Here are my top tips for surviving the planning process!
1. Location, Location, Location
Destination is everything. And understanding what your family group wants from the vacation is the first question to ask. From flop & drop beach breaks to exhilarating ski trips and multi-generation adventures there is the perfect location for every family. You just need to know where to find it! Which takes me to tip number 2!
2. Enlist the help of an experienced Travel Advisor.
Yes, the world is readily available to book with the click of a button, but when dealing with a large group or even a small group, an experienced Travel Advisor can help you navigate the pitfalls and make it easy to experience some of the world’s finest places by recommending hotels and resorts that are designed with families in mind. Yes, please!
3. Hotels & Resorts
Your hotel choice is just as important as your destination. Finding a fantastic property that is super family friendly but doesn’t leave you compromising on Luxe and comfort for me is a must.
Whether we are travelling in big cities like Barcelona or to Tropical Island Resorts in Fiji, if we are travelling in warmer months then a great swimming pool for our kids can be a deal breaker. There are only so many hours you can have small people sightseeing cathedrals without the promise of some relaxed fun at the end of it. Let’s be honest, Gelato bribes will only go so far and a whiny 5yr old is never a fun travelling companion!
This European summer we will be checking out these gorgeous properties with ah – may – zing pools!
Barcelona Catedral Hotel -A rooftop pool in Barcelona overlooking the incredible city scape? Yes please!
Grand Hotel Imperiale – How about a glass of bubbles, a sun lounger and the stunning Lake Como as your back drop? Don’t mind if I do!
And the best bit? Happy kids!
4. Know your travelling group
Now I don’t mean, who is Uncle Johnny and what’s that cousins name.
Of course you know who Uncle Johnny and Aunt Sarah are. I mean, it is important to understand that while Uncle Johnny likes the finer things in life and has an unlimited budget; Aunt Sarah may be desperately in need of a kids club to give her a break. Understanding what each of your travelling group wants from the trip can make it so much easier to find the perfect Resort.
Finding a happy medium with a property that offers beautiful upgrade options for those with a larger budget or those wanting to splurge and still catering for the rest of the family members in terms of facilities and bedding configurations is something your Travel Advisor is an expert at. Utilise their knowledge! Or mine! email@example.com
5. Enjoy and Remember why you’re doing it in the first place.
Finalising the details and securing the best vacation for your family can be tricky, but take a deep breath and remember this. The treasured memories your family will have from your shared time away will be worth any headache induced by the planning process! And the cocktails waiting for you at the pool bar will help too!
So what are you waiting for? Go explore this beautiful world with the people you love!
